It is expected that most proposals for online delivery of graduate programs at UMASS Boston will be for "online options within an existing or proposed degree program." An "online option" is not in itself a degree program. It is, rather, a vehicle for online delivery of a majority of the work required for a degree program. Salient features of an "online option" include: \par \par }\pard \fi-360\li720\widctlpar\faauto\adjustright\rin0\lin720\itap0 {a.)\tab Its requirements (e.g. number of credits, course requirements, capstone requirements, other requiremen ts) and academic performance standards are the same as those of the degree program of which it is part. \par b.) Students are selected by the same admissions standards and processes as for the \par }\pard \li360\widctlpar\faauto\adjustright\rin0\lin360\itap0 { face-to-face program. \par c.) Online-option students may be tracked for planning and administrative purposes, \par }\pard \fi360\li360\widctlpar\faauto\adjustright\rin0\lin360\itap0 {but no identifying mark will appear on their transcripts. \par \par }\pard \fi-360\li360\widctlpar\faauto\adjustright\rin0\lin360\itap0 {II.\tab Potentially, under special circumstances, a program may wish to propose an "online track" within an existing or proposed degree program (i.e., a track that will be available only online, not face-to-face). The salient features of an "online track" would include: \par \par \tab a.) The same total number of credits as the degree program of which it is part. \par }\pard \li360\widctlpar\faauto\adjustright\rin0\lin360\itap0 {b.) Normally, a core of coursework in common with the degree program of which it is part. \par c.) A divergent set of requirements for the non-core portion of the program, either to \par emphasize a different academic focus or to better adapt the program to online \par delivery. \par d.) Identification of online-track students as such on their transcripts. \par \par }\pard \widctlpar\faauto\adjustright\rin0\lin0\itap0 {III. An "online degree program" would be one that was specifically taken through new \par program approval (Faculty Council, BOT, BHE) as an online-only degree program \par separate from any existing or proposed face-to-face program. \par \par The Graduate Studies Committee at this time anticipates that proposals for new \par graduate programs to be delivered largely or completely online will come forward under section I above, as "online options" within degree programs, rather than under section III. \par \par }{\b It is important that all units on campus involved with graduate degree programs to be delivered online carefully observe the distinctions set out here in advertising or otherwise representing these programs to the public. \par }{\tab \par }\pard \li360\widctlpar\faauto\adjustright\rin0\lin360\itap0 { \par }}
